LPSS lasers offer several different advantages over other laser types. Flash lamps, operated in pulsed mode, are able to produce microsecond and millisecond duration pulses at high repetition rates. Additionally, they can produce light of high radiant intensities and generate light over a continuous spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared. Lamps filled with noble gases, such as Xenon and Krypton, are the most efficient at radiating wavelengths of light that the crystal can absorb. In flash lamps, noble gases are the most efficient at radiating wavelengths that the laser crystal is able to absorb. Nd:YAG, a type neodymium-doped crystal, is the most common type of gain medium in LPSS designs. The plasma radiates intense light which is then coupled into a laser crystal, thus exciting the laser media. Flash lamps operate using an electric current discharged through a gas-filled quartz tube, resulting in the generation of hot plasma. The flash lamp design allows for the production of extremely intense and full-spectrum white light for short periods of time. Excited electrons rising and falling energy levels result in the emission of photons, which allows the laser to function. While several different methods of optical pumping exist, one of the most familiar is lamp pumping via arc or flash lamp. ![]() Using this method, the medium absorbs the energy and produces excited states in its atoms. Most solid state lasers require pumping to transfer energy into a gain medium. The ruby laser, invented in 1960 by Theodore Maiman, employed lamp-pumping as a fundamental operating principle.ĭue to their high intensity and brightness at short wavelengths, flash lamps are ideal for optically pumping solid state lasers. Basics of Lamp-Pumped Solid State (LPSS) LasersĪs the trailblazer for many modern day laser designs, LPSS lasers are a mature technology that have been around since the invention of the first laser. United Way of Acadiana is honored to host the Teacher Awards for the third consecutive year as part of Education Week festivities. Then, to be considered for selection as a finalist honoree, nominated teachers will be asked to complete a post-nomination form, which provides the selections committee with additional insight into their educational achievements.Īll nominated teachers and finalists will be celebrated at an in-person ceremony to be held on March 16, 2023. ![]() ![]() All nominated educators will be recognized at a surprise Pin Patrol. Selections for the 2023 Honorees will include two parts. Nominees must be an active, full-time educator in a Lafayette Parish public, charter, private, or parochial school system.Ĭategories include Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and Inspirational. These awards seek to recognize educators who are academically inspiring, dedicated to all students’ growth and achievement, and who are resilient and creative in their chosen profession. Nominations will be open from November 7th to December 16th, 2022! United Way of Acadiana announces nominations are now open for the 2023 United Way of Acadiana Teacher Awards.
